Indonesia’s Ministry of Forestry (KLHK) reported that in 2024, the country’s forested land area reached 95.5 million hectares, or about 51.1% of the total land area. However, net deforestation remains at 175,400 hectares per year, the majority occurring in secondary forests (KLHK, 2025). Although this figure shows improvement, deforestation continues to pose a significant challenge to maintaining ecological balance and controlling greenhouse gas emissions.
In response, Kawan Lama Group once again launched the “Trees for Tomorrow” program — a sustainability initiative focused on reforestation and environmental preservation through the planting and distribution of trees across Indonesia. This program reflects Kawan Lama Group’s concrete commitment to “Bring Value for Better Life”, not only to customers but also to the planet and future generations.
Kuncoro Wibowo, Chairman of Kawan Lama Group, stated, “In line with the spirit of Kawan Lama Group’s 70th anniversary, this initiative represents our core value of Growing Together — not only in building business, but also in nurturing a better life for the earth and its people. We want to ensure that every step in our long journey leaves a positive and sustainable legacy.”
Environmental commitment has long been part of Kawan Lama Group’s journey. Over the past several years, the company has distributed more than one million trees across major cities in Indonesia through this sustainability initiative. Entering its 70th year, Kawan Lama Group is reinforcing its green commitment with a more inclusive and relevant approach, combining on-ground actions with digital campaigns.
As a manifestation of this commitment, Kawan Lama Group has been undertaking the Trees for Tomorrow program across various cities in Indonesia. This year’s initiative began during National Customer Day in September, with the distribution of more than 4,000 productive fruit trees to customers nationwide — symbolizing collaboration between the company and its customers to preserve the environment and create a greener planet.
The efforts continued in early October with the launch of the digital campaign “1 Like = 1 Tree”, inviting public participation and fostering a collective spirit toward reforestation. The campaign received overwhelming enthusiasm, surpassing its initial participation target within weeks. This strong support became the foundation for Kawan Lama Group to expand the Trees for Tomorrow program to 10 major cities across Indonesia, with a total of more than 25,000 trees to be planted and distributed through 2027.
Adeline Ausy Setiawan, Strategic Marketing Services Director of Kawan Lama Group, added, “Trees for Tomorrow is part of Kawan Lama Group’s long-term sustainability strategy, aimed at creating lasting value not only for customers, but also for the environment and society. Through the digital campaign 1 Like = 1 Tree, we’re expanding public participation so that environmental preservation can become a shared movement. We believe sustainability is no longer an option — it’s a necessity for every business that wants to grow responsibly.”
To maximize the impact, the selection of tree species is carefully considered. Trembesi is known as a “giant carbon absorber” thanks to its exceptional ability to absorb carbon dioxide (CO₂) and produce large amounts of oxygen (O₂). Trembesi also symbolizes Kawan Lama Group’s commitment to supporting emission control and improving air quality for future generations. In addition to Trembesi, the company also distributes productive fruit trees such as mango, soursop, guava, and avocado — species that not only provide ecological benefits but also generate economic and social value for surrounding communities.
The program also involves hundreds of Kawan Lama Group employees as green stewards, who actively participate in tree planting and care. This initiative reflects the company’s collaborative spirit in driving real sustainability actions — starting from within, growing alongside communities, and contributing positive impact for Indonesia.
