Living World Denpasar Proves That Shopping Centres Can Be Part of the Climate Solution

Marking World Solar Month, Living World Denpasar presents a measurable milestone, 1,224 tonnes of carbon emissions successfully avoided through its Solar Power Generation System (PLTS), as part of a broader commitment to more efficient and sustainable daily operations.

Living World Denpasar Views Sustainability as a Responsibility, Not an Option

For Maria Lucia Lazuardi, General Manager of Living World Denpasar, this achievement reflects a broader perspective on the role a shopping centre can and should play.

"World Solar Month serves as a reminder that renewable energy holds a vital role in building a more sustainable future. Living World Denpasar believes that today's shopping centres must go beyond providing comfort and experience, they also carry a responsibility toward the environment."

A Decision Made on the Rooftop, an Impact Measured in Thousands of Tonnes

Since 10 April 2024, 905 solar panels have been installed across the rooftop of Living World Denpasar, with a total capacity of 500 KWP. To date, the installation has successfully avoided 1,224 tonnes of CO₂e in carbon emissions, equivalent to leaving 572 tonnes of coal unburned or the carbon absorption of 55,600 trees over a full year.

More Than Solar: How Every Corner of the Building Works to Cut Emissions

Energy efficiency at Living World Denpasar extends well beyond the rooftop. The use of Low-E Skylight Glass and double-laminated ceramic fritted glass maximises the penetration of natural light, significantly reducing electricity consumption. Across the entire mall, 95% of the lighting system has been converted to energy-efficient LED. On the cooling side, a Chiller Plant System with ceramic bearing technology delivers up to 20% in energy savings and prevents more than 1,160 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

The Same Commitment, Extended to Water

Water resources are managed with the same level of seriousness, through AC condensation water recycling, wastewater treatment, and rainwater harvesting via a detention pond. The result is annual water savings equivalent to the capacity of 35 Olympic standard swimming pools.

When It Comes to Waste, Living World Denpasar Steps Up

Through partnerships with third-party operators, Living World Denpasar actively runs recycling programmes covering a range of materials, from plastic bottles and disposable chopsticks to bamboo skewers. Beyond waste reduction, the initiative also serves as a platform to educate visitors on the importance of responsible waste management.

The Journey Does Not Stop Here

For Living World Denpasar, the figures recorded today are not a finish line; they are part of an ongoing journey.

"Going forward, we will continue to introduce new sustainability initiatives and strengthen collaborations across sectors to encourage a more environmentally conscious way of living. Through these efforts, Living World Denpasar aims to grow as a modern lifestyle and retail destination that is equally committed to sustainability," said Maria.
