Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to step out of university and straight into a role that shapes you as a business leader? At Kawan Lama Group, that opportunity is very real. Through the Management Trainee (MT) Program, many fresh graduates have found not just a job, but a genuine career path — and you could be one of them.

Kawan Lama Group: A Place Built for Growth

Kawan Lama Group is one of Indonesia's leading retail and commercial business groups, home to a wide portfolio of well-known brands across retail, lifestyle, and commercial and industrial solutions. The company's journey began in 1955, and today its business network spans numerous provinces across Indonesia.

What truly sets Kawan Lama Group apart, however, isn't just the scale of its business — it's the company's genuine commitment to employee career development. Here, employees aren't simply hired to work; they're nurtured, trained, and given real opportunities to grow. The Management Trainee program is one of the clearest examples of that commitment.

What Exactly Is the Management Trainee (MT) Program?

Kawan Lama Group's Human Capital Directorate established the Management Trainee program in 2016. Its mission is simple yet ambitious: to develop young talent into future leaders across the company's business lines, whether in corporate functions, business operations, or retail operations across Indonesia.

The program is open to fresh graduates from all academic backgrounds and typically runs for around 9 to 12 months, depending on the track. Two of the key tracks include:

  • Operation Management Trainee (OMT) — preparing future leaders for retail operations, from store-level management to distribution.
  • Merchandising Management Trainee (MMT) — designed for analytically strong talent interested in merchandising, inventory planning, category management, and buyer specialist roles.
  • Supply Chain Management Trainee (MT SCM) — shapes the backbone behind smooth supply chain operations, calling for a tough, quick-thinking mindset with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Property Management Trainee (MT Property) — focused on managing the company's high-value assets, from mall operations to commercial properties, with significant responsibility over buildings, facilities, and visitor experience.

Throughout the program, trainees go through several structured learning phases. In the early months, participants are typically based at the Head Office, where they build a solid understanding of company systems and standard operating procedures. From there, they move into on-the-job training, rotating across various business units within Kawan Lama Group, gaining hands-on exposure to real business challenges rather than theory alone.

Beyond technical and soft skills development, trainees also support activities such as character-building sessions and distribution center visits, designed to ensure that by the time they graduate, they're genuinely ready to take on managerial responsibilities.

A Story from Someone Who's Been There

To bring the experience to life, here's a story from Dinda Karina Hutagalung, now serving as Deputy Store Manager at AZKO Queen City Mall Semarang. She joined Kawan Lama Group's Retail OMT program in 2025 at just 23 years old, and went on to earn the title of Best OMT from batch 16.

Dinda shared that when she first joined as a fresh graduate, she assumed she'd have more time to simply observe, since this was also her first full-time work experience. That expectation quickly shifted once the program got underway.

"As a fresh graduate, I thought I'd have more time to observe first, since this was also my first full-time work experience. Turns out I was immediately expected to adapt quickly and make decisions that had a real impact on the business," said Dinda.

The pace, she said, was incredibly dynamic, shifting from one thing to the next within a single day.

"Things move really fast! Mornings could be spent discussing the action plan, afternoons managing operations, then going through the daily job desc checklist, and suddenly you're back to the action plan again. You've got to move quickly, because being even a little late can seriously affect the business. Challenging, but super exciting!" she added.

Ready to Start Your Own Career Journey?

The Management Trainee program stands as real proof that Kawan Lama Group takes employee development seriously. From structured training and cross-unit rotations to close mentorship along the way, everything is designed to shape the business leaders of tomorrow, and that journey could very well start with you.
